This page contains visual results from the ALife 14 paper Identifying Necessary Conditions for Open-Ended Evolution Through the Artificial Life World of Chromaria.

Each video shows several different eras of a run of Chromaria over 50,000 reproduction cycles, starting near the beginning of the run and then periodically skipping forward by thousands of reproductions to illustrate later eras. This way, the evolutionary dynamics over the entire run are surveyed broadly, yet succinctly.

In the standard setup, individuals see all the Chromarians that have successfully planted underneath them.

In the control, however, individuals are blind to each other and can only see the static background.
